K-style and half-round profiles

K-style is the profile on most American houses: flat back, decorative front face with an ogee curve that resembles crown moulding. It is not chosen for looks alone. For a given nominal width it holds substantially more water than a round trough, because the cross-section is closer to a rectangle. That capacity advantage is the main reason it became standard. Half-round is exactly what it sounds like, a semicircular trough, and it is the traditional profile on older and higher-end homes. It carries less water at the same nominal size, so it generally needs to be specified a size up or paired with more downspouts. In exchange it is easier to clean, has no interior corner for debris to pack into, and on the right house it looks correct in a way K-style does not. It usually costs more, partly for material and partly because the hanging hardware is different. There is no universally better answer. There is a correct answer for a given house, and it depends on what the roof drains, what the architecture asks for, and what budget the job has to work inside.
