Soffit vents and why gutters must not block them

The underside of a roof overhang usually carries ventilation, either as perforated soffit panels or as separate vents set into it. That intake is one half of a system that draws air in at the eave and exhausts it at the ridge, and it is what keeps an attic close to outdoor temperature. It matters here for two reasons. First, gutter work happens directly alongside it, and hangers, guards or downspout straps installed carelessly can obstruct the intake. A blocked soffit vent does not announce itself. It shows up a year later as a warmer attic, which means more melting on the roof, which means more ice at the eave, which gets blamed on the gutter. Second, that same relationship runs the other way: if a house has recurring ice dams, attic ventilation and insulation are part of the diagnosis, not just the gutter. When gutter guards are being fitted along an overhang with continuous perforated soffit, it is worth confirming that the installation does not close it off. It is an easy thing to overlook and an expensive one to trace backwards.
