Downspout size: 2x3 versus 3x4

Downspouts come in two common rectangular sizes and the difference between them is larger than it looks. The standard 2x3 has six square inches of cross-section. A 3x4 has twelve, so it moves roughly twice the water, and its larger outlet is much harder to block completely. That second point matters more than the capacity in practice. Most downspout blockages are not gradual accumulations; they are a single wad of leaves or a tennis ball or a nest that lodges at the top elbow. A 2x3 opening is small enough for one object to close it entirely, at which point the gutter above it is holding water with nowhere to go. Upsizing downspouts is one of the cheapest meaningful improvements available on an otherwise sound system, because it requires no change to the gutter itself. It is particularly worth doing on runs fed by a valley, on any run over about thirty feet, and on the elevation that gets the most roof. If a quote specifies 3x4 and another specifies 2x3, that is a real difference in what you are buying, not a preference.
