Repair or replace, decided honestly

The question is not how old the system is. Plenty of twenty-year-old gutter is sound, and plenty of eight-year-old gutter was installed badly enough to be beyond saving. The useful question is how many separate things are wrong. One sagging run, one leaking miter, one loose downspout: these are repairs, and a contractor who tells you otherwise is selling rather than assessing. The picture changes when failures are independent of one another. A system that is sagging in one place, leaking at a corner, undersized on one elevation and short a downspout somewhere else is not a system with four problems. It is a system at the end of its service life presenting four symptoms, and fixing them one at a time means paying four trip charges to arrive where a replacement would have put you. The other consideration is the fascia. If the board behind the gutter is soft, the repair is carpentry as much as gutter work, and that changes the arithmetic considerably. A fair assessment tells you which of these you are looking at, including when the answer is that a repair will do.
