Erosion, mulch washout and the planting bed below

The first visible consequence of a gutter problem is rarely inside the house. It is in the bed underneath. Water released from a roof edge, or dumped from a downspout without an extension, arrives with enough energy to move soil and mulch, and it does so in the same place every time it rains. The result is a channel cut through the bed, mulch piled at the low end or washed onto a walk, and plants sitting with their roots alternately saturated and exposed. Repeated saturation next to a foundation is the more serious version of the same problem, but the erosion is the early warning and it is visible months or years beforehand. There is a landscaping fix and a gutter fix, and they solve different things. River rock or a splash zone under a discharge point absorbs the impact and stops the channel forming. That is worth doing. It does not address the fact that the water is still being deposited next to the foundation, which is a matter of extending the discharge further out. Doing the first without the second makes the symptom disappear while the cause continues.
