What a contractor should look at on an estimate visit

A quote produced from the driveway in five minutes is a guess with a number attached. There is a reasonable minimum for what an assessment involves, and it is worth knowing so you can tell the difference. Roof area and pitch have to be established, because that is what sizing is calculated from, and it has to be done per elevation rather than for the house as a whole. The existing downspout positions and count should be noted along with where the valleys discharge. The fascia should be inspected, ideally probed where the gutter is sagging, since soft fascia changes the scope materially. Existing pitch is worth checking, because a system that never drained properly tells you something about what went wrong last time. The ground at each discharge point matters, since grading determines what the downspout arrangement has to accomplish. And access should be looked at honestly, because a second-story elevation over a sloped bed is a real constraint. None of this takes long. What it produces is a quote that will not need revising once the old gutter comes off.
