Why aluminum gutter moves, and what that breaks

Aluminum expands and contracts noticeably with temperature. Across an Iowa year, from a January morning to an afternoon in July, a long run changes length by a visible amount. The system has to accommodate that movement, and most of the failures people describe as poor workmanship are actually the result of a design that did not. Spike-and-ferrule hanging is the classic example. Every cycle of expansion works the spike out of the fascia a fraction further, until the run sags between fasteners. Rigid connections at both ends of a very long run have a similar problem: something has to give, and it is usually a sealed joint. This is one of the practical arguments for seamless construction, since fewer joints means fewer places where movement concentrates. It is also why sealant selection matters, because a sealant that cures hard will crack where a flexible one absorbs the movement. None of this is visible on an installation day. It shows up in years three through eight, which is precisely why it is worth asking how a system is being hung rather than only what it is made of.
