Birds, nests and what lives in a gutter

A gutter is an attractive place to nest: sheltered, elevated, out of reach of most predators, and often holding exactly the debris a bird wants to build with. The most common consequence is a completely blocked outlet, since the top of a downspout is a natural corner for material to lodge in and a nest there is effectively a plug. Wasps do something similar under gutter hoods and inside downspout elbows. There is also a secondary problem worth knowing about. A gutter that holds standing water because it has lost pitch becomes mosquito habitat, and unlike a bird nest that is not something anyone notices from the ground. If mosquitoes are unusually bad close to the house and the obvious sources have been ruled out, the gutters are worth checking. Guards address most of this by removing both the access and the building material, which is a benefit that rarely appears in the sales pitch alongside the leaf argument. Where nesting has already happened, timing removal matters, since many species are protected while a nest is active and the sensible approach is to clear once it is not.
