What usually goes wrong with a DIY gutter job

Hanging gutter looks straightforward and much of it is. The parts that are not tend to be invisible until the first heavy rain. Pitch is the first. A quarter inch of fall per ten feet has to be established with a level and a line, not by eye, and a run that looks perfectly straight from the driveway can easily be pitched the wrong way. Second is the outlet. Cutting the hole in the right place, in the right size, and sealing the drop cleanly decides whether the system empties. Third is sectional versus seamless: material bought at a home centre comes in ten-foot lengths, so a forty-foot run gains three joints that a professional install would not have, and those joints are where it will eventually leak. Fourth is fascia condition, which cannot be assessed until the old gutter is off and is genuinely a carpentry question. There is a real and reasonable DIY scope here, and it is maintenance rather than installation. Clearing, flushing, resealing an end cap and adding a downspout extension are all well within reach and make a real difference.
