Looking after a system that is brand new

A new gutter system is close to maintenance-free and not entirely so, and the first year sets the pattern. The single most valuable habit is to look at it during heavy rain a few times in the first months, because installation issues surface then and are trivial to correct while the job is recent. Beyond that the schedule is straightforward. Clear it after leaf fall and before the first hard freeze, since that is the clearing that prevents winter damage. Clear it again in spring for seed pods and whatever arrived over winter. If guards are fitted, that interval stretches considerably but does not become never; mesh still needs an occasional look, particularly where a valley discharges onto it. Check the discharge points seasonally, since extensions get moved by mowing and buried lines get blocked without warning. Once a year, run a hose through it and watch. What you are looking for is any change from how it behaved when it was new: water standing where it did not before, a downspout running slower than the others. Caught at that stage these are adjustments. Left alone they become the reason for the next replacement.
