Aluminum thickness and why it matters

Residential seamless gutter is nearly always aluminum, but not all aluminum coil is the same. The common thicknesses are .027 and .032 inches. The difference sounds trivial written down and is obvious in the hand: the heavier gauge is noticeably stiffer, holds its shape better across long spans, and takes a ladder lean or an ice load without deforming. Thinner stock is cheaper per foot, and on a bid sheet that difference is invisible unless someone writes it down. It shows up later as oil-canning, the wavy look along a long straight run, and as dents that never come out. It also shows up in how the gutter behaves when a section fills with ice. Downspout material follows the same logic. The other spec worth asking about is the finish, since baked enamel holds colour far longer than a cheaper coating and is what keeps a system from chalking after a few summers. None of this changes what the gutter does. It changes how long it looks and performs like a new one, which is most of what you are buying when you replace a system rather than repair it.
