What a gutter warranty actually covers

Warranty language on gutter work usually covers two different things and it is worth separating them. There is a material warranty, which comes from the manufacturer of the coil or the guard and typically covers finish failure, such as the paint chalking, flaking or fading beyond a stated degree, often over a long period. Then there is the workmanship warranty, which comes from the contractor and covers the installation: pitch, hanging, sealed joints, whether the thing was put up correctly. That second one is the one that matters most in the first several years, because that is when installation faults surface, and it is the one with the shorter term and the more variable language. Two questions cut through most of it. Is the workmanship warranty transferable if the house sells, and what specifically voids it? Damage from ice loading and from third parties working on the roof are common and reasonable exclusions. What is worth noticing is a warranty that excludes so much it covers nothing in practice, and, more prosaically, whether the company writing it has been trading long enough to be there when it is called on.
