Drip edge, gutter apron, and the gap behind the gutter

There is a detail at the roof edge that decides whether water entering the gutter actually stays in it. Shingles overhang the roof deck slightly, and water running off them has a tendency to cling to the underside of that overhang rather than dropping cleanly. Surface tension carries it backward, behind the gutter, and down the fascia. On a house with this problem the gutter can be perfectly sized and perfectly clean while the fascia behind it stays wet every time it rains. The fix is a piece of bent metal. Drip edge, installed under the shingles at the roof edge, kicks water outward so it releases instead of wrapping. Gutter apron is a longer version that extends down into the gutter itself and is the more reliable of the two where the gutter is already hung. Neither is expensive and both are far cheaper than the fascia replacement they prevent. If a system has been replaced once already and the fascia is still rotting, this detail is the first thing to check, because it is invisible from the ground and easy to leave out.
