Sequencing a new roof and new gutters

When both are due, the order matters and it is not arbitrary. Gutters generally come off before a roof goes on and go back on afterward, because roofers need the edge clear to work and because tearing off shingles into an installed gutter fills it with debris and nail fragments. If the gutter is being replaced anyway, removing the old system before the roofer arrives means it can be discarded rather than carefully preserved, which saves labour on both jobs. The detail that gets missed is drip edge. It is installed as part of the roofing work, tucked under the shingles at the eave, and it interacts directly with where the gutter hangs. Doing the roof first means the drip edge is already correct when the gutter goes up. Doing the gutter first often means it has to come down again or be worked around. There is also a colour consideration, since new shingles change what the gutter is sitting against. Deciding the gutter colour after the roof is chosen rather than before is the smaller of these points but the one people regret.
