Tying downspouts into buried drain lines

Where grading works against the house, or where an extension across a lawn is impractical, downspouts can be tied into buried pipe that carries water to a discharge point well away from the foundation. Done properly this is the most effective discharge arrangement available. Done poorly it is worse than nothing, because a blocked buried line backs water up to the base of the downspout and holds it against the foundation, which is exactly the outcome the system exists to prevent. Two things separate the two outcomes. The first is a cleanout or an accessible transition at the top, so the line can be cleared without excavation when something does lodge in it. The second is a discharge point that genuinely daylights downhill and cannot itself be blocked by soil, mulch or ice. Rigid smooth-wall pipe carries debris through far better than corrugated flexible pipe, which traps it in every ridge. Before connecting to any existing buried line on an older property, it is worth confirming where it goes and whether it still flows, since plenty of them stopped years ago without anyone noticing.
